Vote Wisely

According to the Administrative code of 1987 section 32 “Nature of Public Office. - Public office is a public trust. Public officers and employees must at all times be accountable to the people, serve them with the utmost responsibility, integrity, loyalty and efficiency, act with patriotism and justice, and lead modest lives.

Democracy is a form of government in which eligible citizens may participate equally – either directly by voting for the passing/ rejecting of laws or running for office themselves, or indirectly through elected representatives.

Preamble of the 1987 Constitution of the Philippines “We, the sovereign Filipino people, imploring the aid of Almighty God, in order to build a just and humane society and establish a Government that shall embody our ideals and aspirations, promote the common good, conserve and develop our patrimony, and secure to ourselves and our posterity the blessings of independence and democracy under the rule of law and a regime of truth, justice, freedom, love, equality, and peace, do ordain and promulgate this Constitution. “

On September 26, 2013 Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Chairman Sixto S. Brillantes Jr. today announced that the poll body’s 1st Division resolved to disqualify incumbent Laguna Governor Emilio Ramon “E.R.” Ejercito for campaign overspending. The Comelec held that Ejercito spent up to  P23,563,365.28 for his campaign despite that he is only authorized to spend P4,576,566 or P3 for every voter registered voter in his province based on Section 5 of COMELEC Resolution No. 9615 or the implementing rules and regulations of Republic Act 9006 otherwise known as the ‘Fair Elections Act’ in connection with the May 13, 2013 elections, states that the aggregate amount that a candidate or party may spend for election campaign shall be “three pesos (P3.00) for every voter currently registered in the constituency where the candidate filed his certificate of candidacy.”

The aspiring politician’s goal is to serve, and to generally improve the conditions here in our country based on what they generally say but how can we believe such words if we are presented with a case like the one involving ER Ejercito who spent more than 20M last 2013 elections and the salary of a governor is only 78,946. Now, we are left with a question, are they that generous to spend millions for the sake of “public service”?
