Demand the Best, Accept Nothing Less
The
Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) commenced through a federation of drivers and
transport operators. Wherein, the group contended the legalization of the
Transport Network Companies (TNC). They argued that due to the legalization of
app-based cabs particularly, Uber and Grab Taxis in the street, the income of the ordinary taxi drivers have fallen.
With
all stated facts of the dispute, I stand firmly before the Transport Network
Companies (TNC). What are these app-based vehicles? According to the Department of
Transportation and Communications (DOTC), TNC are defined as provider of
“prearranged transportation services for compensation using an Internet-based
technology application to connect passengers with drivers using their personal
vehicles.” Many of us, commuters, resort to taxis by all means. However, in
spite of the advantages of having a personal transportation through cabs, it is really
frightening and alarming that there have been many reports of criminal activities
involving ordinary taxis.
As
a commuter, I am real terrified of what has been happening, however, there are
services who offer secure ride in the realm of personal transportation industry.
One of these are the Transport Network Companies (TNC), including the Uber and
Grab Taxis. Where in fact, according to the commuters of these app-based cabs,
majority of them have agreed that TNC’s are “safer, more convenient and you get
all the information you need to know.” On the other hand, we have been constantly
disturbed by the news of criminal activities involving some of the ordinary
taxis. Incidents involving holdups, increased fare (contract), sexual assaults
and most of us have already experienced, not just once, but more than once, is
rejection. Yes, most of ordinary cabs reject passengers. One of the reasons why
some of the ordinary cabs are taking advantage of the commuters is more likely
because most of them are not well-monitored even though they are regulated unlike
the Transport Network Companies (TNC) which is monitored and can provide a
regulated form of transportation.
Just
like the ordinary taxis, the Transport Network Companies (TNC) has rights also
that should be respected and protected; and inequalities among these types of
personal transportation are not acceptable. We
deserve a kind of regulated transportation industry. Therefore, I support the
Transport Network Companies (TNC) to be part of the vehicles serving in the
street of the country. We should recognize this kind of transportation who is
seeking to offer secure ride home. After all, it’s not about the fare; it’s
about whether you are going to arrive to your destination, safely.
