The legal principle that we are governed by the rule of
law and not rule of man is Greek to the members of ISIS or the Islamic State of
Iraq and Syria. They have taken the laws into their hands while hiding in the
shadow of what they claim to be their religious belief. Even their judiciary
who shall be the vanguard of the administration of justice for an orderly society
has no recognition of such duty. Iraq’s
judiciary, rather than a site of accountability and justice, is instead a locus
of further abuse.[1]
They continuously violate the most precious human rights,
not just of the people within their reach, but of all the people on Earth. For instance, last January, there was a
massacre in the offices of Charlie Hebdo- a satirical magazine in France which
publishes humorous attack against Prophet Mohammed and the ISIS claimed that
they have plotted that attack. It resulted to the outcry for freedom of speech
and freedom of the press vis-a vis freedom of religion.
The ISIS, as humans, even if their actions are inhumane,
has the same freedom. They have the right to believe the preaching of their
religion. However, while the right to believe may be an absolute right, the
right to act on one’s belief do not stand on the same ground. Killing, abuse of
women and of children, and the likes result to nothing but a destruction of human
rights.
Human rights are inherent to all human beings, whatever
our nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, colour,
religion, language or any other status. [2]
People are equally entitled of their human rights and these rights are all
interrelated, interdependent and indivisible. [3]
The Philippines is now working on the Bangsamoro Basic
Law which will hopefully pave way for the transition from war to peace. But the
Mamasapano clash which stemmed from the plan to capture Marwan, an ISIS
member, interrupted the passing into law of BBL. ISIS does nothing but to ruin
the each nation’s journey to a peaceful society... to a peaceful world.
They hide in the shadows of
their religious beliefs, but most people perceive them to be terrorists and
they prove that with their behavior. They may claim they want peaceful
coexistence but it does not seem to be the case.
What do ISIS really wants?
