The ISIS is now the largest,
strongest, richest and most popular terrorist organization around the world.
The organization started in Syria where there is an ongoing civil war. The
organization was left untouched by the Syrian government and rebels. The Syrian
government and rebels focused their resources against each other. If the Syrian
government battles the ISIS, then it means that it has one bullet, one rifle
and one soldier less for its fight with the rebels. The same thinking goes for
the rebels. During this time, ISIS is considered s single country organization.
However, its leader is quite a strategic thinker. For years in Iraq, the
minority Sunni Muslims were disenchanted and angry with the Shiite Muslims
after the fall of Saddam Hussein. The majority Shiite Muslims hold the
government. There were multiple instances where the Sunni Muslims boycotted the
election or those elected Sunni Muslim legislators resigned from their
positions. What the ISIS leader did next was a brilliant strategic move (Note: the
adjective is for the strategic move and not to the violence that resulted from
it.). He collaborated with the Sunni Muslim tribal leaders to abandon the Shiite
Muslim dominated government. When the ISIS attacked the western regions of
Iraq? Most of the Iraqi soldiers, who were Sunni Muslims, abandoned their posts
and weapons. The ISIS seized the abandoned weapons which include artillery,
tanks and even helicopters. The seized weapons tremendously increased the fighting
capabilities and effectiveness of the ISIS. With these weapons and new
recruits, it has the capability to attack the neighboring Iraq regions, the
Kurdish region in the north and the capital of Baghdad in the center. It also
gained a cash engine – oil. ISIS continued to operate the seized oil wells and
refinery and sold the oil at less than 50% off the market price. With this oil
production, ISIS was able to generate a stable cash flow which allows it to
focus on invading other regions of the Iraq.
ISIS has shown unprecedented brutality
against people who are not aligned with their ideologies. This brutality can be
used against the ISIS. When the Turkish pilot was killed by the ISIS, the
majority of the Turkish population clamored for revenge. It also united the
different tribes in the Kurdish region when ISIS performed mass killing in some
Kurdish villages. The stable Middle East governments, such as Saudi Arabia, are
funding the opposition forces against the ISIS. They also fear that the ISIS
might go to their country if they don’t do anything. To eliminate the ISIS,
there is one missing element. The United States has been contented in providing
air power and military advisory to the opposition forces. However, these
supports are inadequate when the opposition forces are holding back their full
fighting power (The hold back is due to the possibility that after ISIS, they
will return to fighting again with each other.). If the United States wants to
redeem itself from its debacle in the Iraq occupation, then this is a good
opportunity. Public sentiments in the United States have risen to the level
that the executive government has political capital to commit ground forces in
the battle against the ISIS. 2016 is an election year in the United States.
Will the new President have the conviction of the Bushes?
